Memorial Day used to be known as "Decoration Day" and was a day set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It began to be widely observed on May 30, 1868.

Sen Obama remarked in a speech in South Dakota on Memorial Day that the holiday honors the fallen heroes of our country and he saw some in the audience. I'm paraphrasing but he saw fallen heroes in the audience??? Just another gaff from the great one.
