The Spin

After Tuesday night's dustup between Commissioner Jolley and Coleen Balzarini, Mayor Stebbins is quoted in today's Tribune as saying, "I think she (Jolley) needs to find the facts before she attacks".

Wake up Mayor. Jolley was trying to get to the facts.

There are some at city hall, the mayor obviously included, who think that asking questions to get information is "attacking". I guess I can sort of understand this mentality considering its been nearly forever since we have had a city commissioner who is actually interested in learning the facts and who does not let childish facial expressions and evasiveness stop her.

If staff would just do their jobs, answer questions and give the requested information without excuses, this would not have happened.

And why did Coleen get so upset? Something is not right when a person gets totally flustered and walks out inappropriately before the meeting is over, after they have been asked questions pertaining to their actions. If you are doing the right thing there are no problems. You should be content to answer questions until the cows come home.

As Mary Jolley was quoted as saying, "I ask questions. It's not surprising I ask questions, I don't think".

And I can safely say that Mary won't stop asking questions. It's what she was elected to do.

Drop out Stebbins, you did it in college, you can do it here. Working hard and learning facts does not fit you. Go back to acting so you can make believe and pretend to be someone else in a harmless forum.

Is anyone really NOT suprised that Stebbins stuck up for Balzarini? I'm not you had to know that was coming. Stebbins has defames Mary other times also, (like the bert and ernies comment).
Commission meeting arent supposed to be all honey sweet. They are suppose to ask questions, attack issues and get things accomplished. No "oh poor me I quit" tuck tail and run crap..my 8yr old dosen't even do that anymore.

Balzarini should me made to "fess up" what the heck is she covering up? Seems to me that there are far too many deep dark secrets down at City Hall. Hang in there Mary!

Keep up the good work with 'Cataract city' and sustaining transparency...

It is not a violation of city policy for a commssioner to talk with a city employee as long as the commissioner coordinates with the city manager, who was in chambers the other night with the staff - who now sit in the audience and why
is that? The city manager evaluates, hires and 'fires' maybe, but since when can't
citizens or commissioners confer with staff? Do we - whether citizen or commissioner - have to file a 'request to talk' form to speak or communicate with
a department chief or city clerk? We don't 'hire of fire' but we certainly can communicate as we see fit but with reason and courtesy of course. It's not the
intent of citizens to waste city staff time, but we do have a constitution that
guarantees open government.

It was POETIC JUSTICE after all the sophistry, misdirection, condescending and
flippant behavior we've seen for MONTHS, to include her honor ON VIDEO expressing her disgust with public commenters, specifically on 2 Jan 2007 (see for yourself folks)......Commissioner Jolley - for months - had formally put her
requests in writing for information and then we're told SME won't give us - or Geeguy or anybody - any information because it's proprietary. That's pure
'bunk' as we've contributed development funding and we don't have to
right to know how it's spent?

If you don't ask the right questions you won't get the right answers and when the other commissioners and mayor START asking firm and probing questions, then Commissioner Jolley AND citizens will keep asking the questions as we're allowed
in a Democracy and Republic.....

Parliamentary procedure allows for the majority to rule, BUT the minority must be heard - which does NOT happen at working agenda meetings and work sessions, where citizens are 'children', to be seen but not heard.

When General Shinseki told Rumsfeld Iraq would need more troops, he was dismissed for his candor. The staff needs now to present the advantages and disadvantages for the commission AND public to scrutinize to improve transparency and improve trust and confidence in our senior staff. There
are many, many city and county public servants who work hard, have great
integrity and perform well and they too yearn for leadership.
