Urban Chickens

Earlier this summer, there was discussion at all of the Neighborhood Councils about allowing chickens within the city limits.

As a member of Neighborhood Council, I received notice yesterday that the City Commission has instructed the Planning/Community Development Department to not proceed any further with pursuing an urban chicken ordinance. All paperwork will be retained, if in the event, the issue is revisited.

Awww...even though I probably wouldn't have any of my own, I was kind of looking forward to having some urban chickens around town!

Excellent! Chickens are dirty nasty animals - except for the ones in the freezer! There are lots who would have taken advantage of bypassing this ordinance - to the detriment of their neighbors.

Anon 4:50.......what's dirty and nasty is industrial-raised chickens, and you do NOT want
to know about that process, and locally-raised chickens (a reasonable number per family)is sensible, promotes better nutrition, better and more humane care for the chickens and an ordinance would be fairly created to respect the rights of those who want better and locally raised food balanced with keeping an appropriate number and this would
not lead to 'factory farms' on Maple Street in GF.

That's a true shame. I know several people who were hoping the ordinance would be lifted so they could have 4-6 hens. With more folks wanting more control of their food supply, it's a shame the city doesn't recognize this small effort.

For everyone that would be a responsible "chicken farmer," there would be 10 that would not clean up after them, make sure that roosters would not be a part of the "flock," and respond to complaints from neighbors.

If you want to live in the country, move there.

The City has misinterpreted the patience of its citizens (waiting for the ordinance to be formulated) as disinterest. With more than a half billion commercial eggs recalled this past summer for salmonella, I want a few free range hens in my backyard. I predict that the chickens will come home to roost, but that a few feathers will get ruffled in this process.

City wide poll Done by the Tribune:: May the 7th/2010
Asking the Question :
Should residents be allowed to keep chickens
in city limits ?
yes 59 % No 41%
TOTAL VOTES 893 ////That's about 527 people who want or they are okay with chickens.
The GF "puposed" ordinance would require you to "Buy" a permit, have a coop inspection, an inspection of your fenced in area. On an annual every year occurance. You would not go to this trouble if you weren't welling to keep it clean and knowing you could be turned down next year.

Let the chickens come home to roost for those willing to raise them properly and in accordance with a reasonable ordinance. Who knows one of my neighbors just might do it and maybe I could be the recipient of a few fresh eggs once in a while.....
